097 Who Carried Us
Hey Chaff Flower, you cannot walk, so your spiny seeds hold on to whoever passes by and travel with them to new ground.
Who carried us to where we are now?
Who carried you to where you are now?
After a walk through a field, you find tiny spiky seeds stuck all over your socks.
You did not pick them up. They picked you.
What really happens
The chaff flower makes small seeds with stiff, spiny parts that hook onto fur and clothing.
Animals and people carry them away, and they drop off on new ground.
How we know: Seed dispersal by hooking onto animals is called epizoochory; Achyranthes aspera is a common example in India.
The turn
None of us got here alone.
Someone carried us: a parent, a teacher, a friend, a stranger who gave us a chance.
Three takeaways
- You were carried here.
- Remember who carried you.
- Let someone else hold on to you.
Thank those who carried us.
… we have each of us cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flames within us.
