095 Thank the Ground
Hey Soil, everything that dies gets handed to you, and you hand it back as new life.
When did anyone last thank the ground?
When did anyone last thank the ground?
Fallen leaves, a dead branch, a beetle on its back, all lying on the forest floor.
Come back in a few seasons. They are gone. In their place, new green shoots.
What really happens
Soil is alive with fungi, bacteria, worms and insects that break down dead plants and animals.
They return the nutrients to the soil, where new plants take them up and grow.
How we know: Decomposition and nutrient cycling are basic ecology.
The turn
Everything we eat began in soil.
We walk on it, build on it, and almost never thank it.
Three takeaways
- Endings feed beginnings.
- The ground beneath you is working for you.
- Gratitude starts with what you stand on.
Thank the ground you stand on.
The dust receives insult and in return offers her flowers.
