074 Her Voice in the Crowd
Hey Cow, in a noisy herd, you and your calf know each other's call from the very first days.
Whose voice do we know in any crowd?
Whose voice would you know in any crowd?
A noisy cattle shed at feeding time. Dozens of cows are calling.
One calf calls once. Across the shed, one cow lifts her head and calls back.
What really happens
Each cow has her own voice, and so does each calf.
Cows and their calves learn each other's calls in the first days after birth, and can find each other by sound even in a noisy herd.
How we know: Recordings of cattle calls have shown each cow's voice is individual (Padilla de la Torre and colleagues, 2015).
The turn
We live in noise: messages, news, opinions.
In all that noise, the voices that matter most are the ones we learned first and know best.
Three takeaways
- Learn the voices that matter.
- In the noise, listen for the one you love.
- Be a voice someone can always find.
In any crowd, I know your voice.
Let the voice within your voice speak to the ear of his ear.
